If we’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a world of endless snow and crystal-blue ice, the Aletsch Glacier in the Jungfrau region of Valais, Switzerland, is the perfect destination.
As the longest glacier in Europe, stretching about 22.5 kilometers, it’s a natural wonder that invites us to explore a landscape shaped by ice for thousands of years. Lykkers, get ready for a trip that will fill your camera and your soul.

Where Exactly Is Aletsch Glacier?

The Aletsch Glacier lies on the southern side of the Jungfrau massif in the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. It flows down from the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger mountains, eventually draining into the Rhône Valley. It’s part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most popular access points to the glacier are Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp, three car-free mountain villages reachable by cable car.

How to Get There: Transportation Guide

We can reach the Aletsch Glacier region via public transport easily from major Swiss cities:
- From Zurich: Take a train to Brig (around 2 hours), then transfer to Mörel, Betten Talstation, or Fiesch.
- From Bern: Take a direct train to Brig (around 1.5 hours), then transfer.
- From Geneva: Take a train to Brig (about 2.5 hours), then transfer.
Once at Mörel, Betten Talstation, or Fiesch, we’ll ride the cable car up to Riederalp, Bettmeralp, or Fiescheralp. These charming villages serve as the base for visiting the glacier.

Ticket Prices and Opening Hours

The glacier itself is in a protected natural area and doesn't charge an entrance fee. But we’ll need tickets for the cable cars and viewpoints:
- Cable Car to Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn: Around $38–$55 USD round-trip (cheaper with Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card).
- Jungfraujoch “Top of Europe” ticket (if accessing from Grindelwald/Interlaken): Around $110–$125 USD depending on season and time.
Most cable cars run between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with slight variations by season. It’s smart to check the exact schedule on the official websites before heading out.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

- June to September: Ideal for hiking, clear views, and accessible trails.
- October to May: The glacier is magical in the snow, but hiking is limited and weather may affect visibility.
For the best balance of weather and views, July and August are our top picks.

What to See and Do

There’s a lot waiting for us in this icy wonderland:
- Eggishorn Viewpoint: Offers the best panoramic views of the glacier.
- Bettmerhorn Viewpoint: Easier to access, still amazing.
- Hiking the Aletsch Panorama Trail: A 3-hour scenic hike from Bettmeralp to Riederalp.
- UNESCO Info Center in Naters: Interactive displays about glacier history, geology, and ecology.

Where to Stay

We can find Alpine-style hotels, cozy B&Bs, and vacation apartments in Bettmeralp, Riederalp, or Fiescheralp. These villages are quiet and completely car-free, perfect for a restful stay.
- Budget lodges: From $85 USD per night
- Mid-range hotels: Around $130–$180 USD per night
- Mountain resorts: Up to $220 USD+ per night, especially in summer peak

Tips for a Perfect Visit

1. Dress in layers: Even in summer, it gets cold above 2,000 meters.
2. Wear sturdy hiking boots: Some trails can be rocky or icy.
3. Use a Swiss Travel Pass: Great value on trains and cable cars.
4. Check webcams and weather before going—fog can block glacier views.
5. Start early: Crowds are fewer and the lighting is perfect for photos.

Why Aletsch Glacier Feels So Special

What makes the Aletsch Glacier unforgettable isn’t just its size. It’s the quiet, the power of nature, and the feeling that we’re walking through a frozen chapter of the Earth’s history. The way the ice curves around peaks and valleys shows us a story written in snow and time.
