When someone mentions golf, most of us think of it as a fancy sport for rich people.
But golf is becoming more and more popular and beginner-friendly. These days, anyone can join in, enjoy the open space, breathe in fresh air, and have fun while learning something new.

What Does “GOLF” Mean?

Believe it or not, the word “GOLF” is often said to stand for:
G – Green (Nature)
O – Oxygen (Fresh air)
L – Light (Sunshine)
F – Friendship (Social fun)
Sounds nice, right? Golf really is a mix of nature, exercise, and making new friends. No wonder so many businesspeople like to play golf—it's social, refreshing, and also one of the world's top 5 sports, along with soccer, basketball, tennis, and Formula 1 racing.

What's on a Golf Course?

Golf courses can vary in size, but usually they're about 5,500 to 7,500 meters long. There are 18 holes in a standard course, and you'll come across these areas:
• Tee Box (starting point)
• Fairway (main grass path)
• Rough (long grass)
• Water hazards (ponds/lakes)
• Bunkers (sand traps)
• Green (the area around the hole)

Basic Golf Rules

So what's the goal in golf? Is it really just hitting a ball into a hole?
Kind of, yes! But it's more than that. The main rule is:
Start at the tee and hit your ball into the hole with as few strokes as possible.
That's it! Of course, there are other rules like taking turns, being on time, staying safe, and playing fair—basic stuff we all know. Most games have 18 holes, and the player with the lowest total strokes wins.

What's “Par”?

Each hole has a set number of strokes you're expected to take. This is called “par.” Most 18-hole courses are designed for 72 total strokes (called “Par 72”), with a mix of:
• Four par-3 holes
• Four par-5 holes
• Ten par-4 holes

Shot Play vs. Match Play

There are two main types of games:
• Shot Play: Add up all your strokes for the 18 holes. The lowest score wins.
• Match Play: Compete hole by hole. Whoever wins the most holes wins the game.

Golf Tips for Beginners

Just getting started? No worries! Focus on these three basics first:

1. Stance

• Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
• Bend slightly at your hips.
• Keep your knees slightly bent.
• Let your arms hang naturally.
• Eyes on the ball, but don't overbend your neck.
• Keep your body balanced.

2. Grip

There are three types: Baseball grip, Overlap grip, and Interlock grip. For beginners, try the baseball grip first.
• Place your left hand on the club first.
• Wrap your fingers around the handle.
• Put your right hand just below, letting the pinky touch your left index finger.
• Thumbs should point down the shaft.

3. Swing

• On your backswing, raise your club until it's parallel to the ground.
• Turn your hips and shoulders smoothly.
• Make sure your arms and legs align with your target direction.
It takes time, but practice makes perfect!

What Gear Do We Need?

Golf Clubs

• Beginners can start with just one club for practice.
• A full set can have up to 14 clubs, including woods, irons, and a putter.
• Choose clubs based on your height and swing style.

Golf Balls

• Most balls are white, but some come in red or orange.
• Beginners can try “Surlyn” balls—they're more durable and easier to control.

Golf Shoes

• Look for shoes with around 12 spikes on the sole to help you stay stable while swinging.

Clothes

• Go for something comfy, sporty, and stylish.
• Most courses require a collared shirt and long pants or skirts.

Hat & Sunglasses

• A cap helps with sun protection.
• Sunglasses are optional but great for bright days.

Gloves

• A glove (usually worn on your lead hand) helps you grip better and prevents blisters.

Golf Bag

• Use a bag to carry your clubs, balls, gloves, and personal stuff. Choose one that suits your size and style.

How to Play at a Golf Course

Ready to hit the course? Here's the usual process:
1. Book a Tee Time: Call ahead to reserve your playing time.
2. Check In: Register at the front desk when you arrive.
3. Change Clothes: Put on your golf gear and store valuables.
4. Get Your Clubs: Bring your gear to the first tee.
5. Decide Order: Figure out who tees off first—draw straws or just agree.
6. Play by the Rules: Follow the course rules and have fun.
7. Take a Break: After 9 holes, most players grab a snack or rest.
8. Finish Up: Play all 18 holes.
9. Clean Up: Shower and change if needed.
10. Pay and Go: Settle your bill and you're done!
